La Condamine, Charles-Marie de
(1701-1774)
   geodesist, naturalist
Born in Paris, Charles-Marie de La Condamine made numerous scientific voyages from which he reported his observations. He took part, with pierre bouguer, in an expedition to Peru (1735-1744) during which they measured the length of an arc of the meridian to one degree. This voyage was also the occasion for the first description of the tree that he called "guinguina" (1738) and of the discovery of rubber. in 1740, La Condamine observed, independently of the italian Bianconi, that the speed of the propagation of sound depends on temperature. Working on a project for a universal system of measurement, Charles de La Condamine proposed the selection of the length of a pendulum striking the second at the equator. He was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1735 and to the académie FRANÇAISE in 1760.
